A Conversation With Rebecca Kelly on The Legacy Bench

From Legal Expertise to Legal Access: Rebecca Kelly on the Future of Law.

What happens when decades of legal expertise meet technology, entrepreneurship and a desire to make quality legal support more accessible?

That was one of the central themes when shizl co-founder Rebecca Kelly joined The Legacy Bench podcast for a wide-ranging conversation about the changing world of law.

With more than 25 years of experience as a data and technology lawyer, Rebecca has seen the legal profession evolve significantly. She has worked with businesses on commercial, technology and data matters, built her own legal practice and, in 2021, co-founded shizl to help make professionally drafted legal documents more accessible to start-ups and SMEs.

But the conversation goes well beyond Rebecca’s own career.

It explores some of the bigger questions facing the legal profession today: what happens as technology changes the way legal work is delivered? Where does AI fit? What does the future look like for paralegals? And how can technology improve access to quality legal support without losing the expertise and judgement that underpin good legal advice?

Where does AI fit into legal documents?

Unsurprisingly, AI was an important part of the conversation.

AI can produce impressive results quickly, and its potential to transform the way businesses work is undeniable. But when it comes to legal documents, speed and convenience aren’t the only considerations. A document can look professional and still contain errors, omissions or wording that isn’t appropriate for the situation it is intended to cover.

That’s where the distinction between technology and legal expertise becomes important.

The question isn’t necessarily whether technology should be used in legal services. It’s how it should be used, and where human expertise remains essential.

For shizl, that distinction is fundamental. Its documents are created by lawyers, combining legal knowledge with technology to make the process of accessing and creating business documents simpler and more affordable.

Rebecca’s conversation with The Legacy Bench covers much more, including her career in law, entrepreneurship, AI, legal technology, access to legal support and the future of the profession.
